Choosing a wedding videographer can be a challenging task. With so many options available, how do you know what matters most? Many couples find it difficult to make a well-informed decision. As an experienced videographer, I’ve written this blog to explain my role and highlight the value a professional wedding video brings. Hopefully, this will help you identify what’s important to you and guide you in choosing the right videographer for your dream day.
Start with your wishes
Before you start searching for a videographer, take the time to discuss what you really want as a couple. I often hear that couples already have a photographer but realize that moving images – especially combined with audio – add an invaluable layer to the memories of their day.
This blog is based on my own experiences as a videographer and feedback from the many couples I’ve worked with over the years. My goal is to provide insights into the options and choices available, helping you make an informed decision.
Capturing the ceremony
For many couples, the ceremony is the most meaningful part of their wedding day. This special moment is filled with emotions, vows, music, and happy faces. It all goes by so quickly, and having the ability to relive it later can be priceless.
Ways to film the ceremony
I typically offer two options for capturing the ceremony:
- Full Ceremony Film
This option captures the entire ceremony from start to finish. While the filming is mostly done with stationary cameras, I ensure multiple angles are covered using two cameras. This allows me to capture not only the couple but also the guests. Small microphones are used to record vows and music, ensuring high-quality audio. This type of video is ideal for couples who want to relive every moment in detail. - Highlights Film
This is a shorter, more artistic summary of the ceremony. The highlights film features the most beautiful moments, often without audio, but accompanied by a carefully chosen soundtrack. These videos are typically 1 to 2 minutes long and provide a loving recap of the ceremony.
The importance of audio in your wedding video
A common question couples ask is: “Should we include audio in our wedding video?” My answer depends entirely on what’s important to you.
If your vows or speeches hold emotional significance, I strongly recommend including audio. Using a small, discreet microphone, I can capture sound without it being intrusive. Even the officiant can be equipped with a microphone if necessary.
If music plays a key role in your ceremony, I can capture it using a microphone or directly via an audio cable connected to the sound system.
For highlights films, I typically use royalty-free music selected during the editing process, making it possible to share the video online.
During an initial meeting, I always discuss audio preferences with couples to ensure we align on expectations and possibilities.
How to choose the right wedding videographer
Selecting the right videographer is a personal decision. Here are some tips to help you:
- Review portfolios
Every videographer has a unique style. Explore multiple portfolios or websites to understand their differences and identify what resonates with you. - Schedule a consultation
A connection with your videographer is essential. They need to be on the same page with you and understand your wishes. During a consultation, you can share your ideas, and you’ll quickly sense whether a good collaboration is possible. - Balance price and quality
Take the time to understand the experience and pricing of the videographers you’re considering. Professional videographers often charge higher fees, but this reflects their quality, expertise, and customer service. Compare packages to find the best match for your needs and budget. - Trust your videographer
Once you’ve chosen a videographer, you’ll likely feel relieved but perhaps still a bit nervous. Trust your videographer and give them the creative freedom to do their job. This trust allows them to capture your day authentically while enabling you to fully enjoy the moment.
